What Did Nehemiah Pray?
Do you want to know the meaning of one verse in the prayer that Nehemiah prayed in Nehemiah 1: 5?
Here is the prayer:
” And said, I beseech thee, o Lord God of the heaven and the great and terrible God, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments”….
Let me share the meaning of this to you:
Nehemiah prayed not to the lily of the valley God but to the God who is the lead the head of all the hosts of heaven. He prayed to the great and terrible God. The terrible God meaning the God that is full of awe and awesomeness.
He prayed to the God that keepeth. (eth words in the bible mean that this is the characteristic of God and his behavior that is perpetual and ongoing never stops). So He is the God that keepeth and never stops and you can count on Him.
He keepeth covenant with Israel and with us. This God of mercy. Mercy here means the God of love that is in action always seeking after us, always seeking after ways to express covenant with us. He is always looking for a way to show and express covenant with us and mercy to us as He says for them that love him.
God looking for those of us that will love him back in this same way. Looking for Him and looking for ways we can show and express covenant but we may not do it the same way. He knows that we are imperfect but he says come on anyway.
I know you love me and I will help you love me. I receive you and teach you how to love me.
The part that says observe his commandments means that we should be searching and looking for ways to be obedient to God and his covenant. We need to be looking for ways we can show obedience to his commission to what we know we are called to be and to do.
We got our orders from God and everything is possible with God because He is the God that keeps covenant with those that love Him no matter how imperfectly and we give attention to what the assignment is from you God.
This is the meaning of that one verse. Powerful.
