Word of the Week: Taste & See
Psalms 34:8 – “Oh taste and see that the Lord is good: Blessed is the man that trusteth in Him” (KJV)
Welcome to word of the week. I wanted to announce a new feature to my blogs. Each week I will highly a word(s) from a particular scripture in the Bible and reveal more truth about that passage of scripture.
The word this week is TASTE and SEE. I want you to look at Psalm 34:8.
Why am I having you look at these two words? Because, we read the Bible but do we really “read” the Bible. Do we have full understanding and meaning of the things that we read? No. Not always. When we don’t we can miss some very important truths or deeper meaning to a verse.
This is where I come in. I want to begin once a week to reveal more biblical truth about God, the Bible and you. I am on a journey to help people understand the Bible and to get deeper meanings out of passages of scripture that will help you unlock the power of scripture. We read a lot of scripture but most of us never go deeper for the meanings of words. The most magnificent book ever written needs to be understood if you are to live by it and give glory to God.
I chose this scripture verse because a lot of people have heard this verse many times. I did a personal survey and asked people what this verse meant and I got various answers of all kinds. People told me it means that God is good, God is kind, see the blessings of the Lord, etc.
This is one of the many verses, if you have been in church any amount of time, that no one can really tell you what taste or see really means. But I am here today to tell you it means more than you think on the surface.
Let’s start with “taste”. How does one actually taste the Lord? Well, let me reveal or uncover the meaning to this marvelous word.
Taste in this verse is the Hebrew word “tawam”. It means to perceive. It also has a deeper meaning. It means to seriously, thoroughly and affectionately consider. Actually put the matter to a test of experience. It means to take notice of and take comfort in His goodness.
See in this verse is the Hebrew word “rawaw”. It means see or gaze but it has a deeper meaning also. It means to have an experience, advise yourself, behold.
Are you beginning to see the verse open up and mean something much more than what you thought it meant. So, if you want to actually get a clear meaning of this verse you would say it like this.
Taste or perceive the goodness of God. Put it on trial. Have an experimental trial of His goodness and see for your self that He is good. You cannot see that He is good unless you perceive (taste) and see (experience) for yourself that God is good. The key is–if you taste you shall see!
You can only know that HE is good, really GOOD by personal experience.
He makes all truly blessed that trust in Him. Try and experience God today. Advise yourself that He is good. Tell yourself “I know my God is good”. He can be nothing but that. Perceive that He is all that He says He is for you.
I hope this definition opened up the meaning of this verse for you. Until next time, be blessed and keep studying.
Beautiful…thanks Steph!
